AGED CARE AND DISABILITY WORK

CHC33021 CERTIFICATE III IN INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT (AGEING AND DISABILITY)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is for people who want to work supporting older people and people with disability.


It prepares you for entry-level work in aged care and disability services, including community settings, residential care, and home-based support. Many graduates work in services linked to the NDIS and aged care providers.


In this course, you will learn how to provide person-centred care. This means:

  • Following each person’s individual support or care plan
  • Respecting people’s choices, culture and independence
  • Supporting people in ways that suit their needs and goals
     

You may support people:

  • In their own homes
  • In residential aged care or disability settings
  • In community programs and services
     

You will learn how to:

  • Assist with personal care and daily activities
  • Support people to stay independent and safe in their own home
  • Work with people who have complex care or support needs
  • Provide care that is flexible and based on individual choice
  • Support some of the most vulnerable people in the community with dignity and respect
     

This course includes both classroom learning and hands-on workplace training. Most of the learning happens in the workplace, where you practise your skills while supporting real people, with guidance from experienced staff.


SKILLS THAT HELP YOU DO WELL IN THIS COURSE

To be successful in this course, it helps if you:

  • Care about helping older people and people with disability
  • Are patient, respectful and kind
  • Can listen well and follow care or support plans
  • Are comfortable helping with personal care tasks
  • Can work safely and follow instructions
  • Are reliable, responsible and willing to learn
     

You do not need previous experience, this course is designed to help you build skills, confidence and work readiness.


JOBS PATHWAYS

After completing this course, you may be able to work in roles such as:

  • Support Worker
  • Assistant in Nursing (AIN)
  • Personal Care Assistant
  • Home Care Worker
  • Community Care Worker
  • Community Support Worker

CHC43121 CERTIFICATE IV IN DISABILITY


COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is for people who want to work in disability support in a more skilled and responsible role.


It prepares you to support people with disability in:

  • Their own homes
  • Community settings
  • Residential care settings
     

In this course, you will learn how to support people in ways that help them:

  • Be more independent
  • Make their own choices
  • Take part in community life
  • Improve their wellbeing
     

You will use a person-centred approach, which means working with each person to understand their goals, strengths and support needs.

At this level, you may:

  • Work on your own without direct supervision
  • Take responsibility for your work within clear rules and guidelines
  • Support, guide or coordinate a small team of workers
     

The course includes both theory learning and hands-on practical training. You will learn skills you can use straight away to support people to reach their goals and live the life they choose.

  

SKILLS THAT WILL HELP YOU DO WELL IN THIS COURSE

To be successful in this course, it helps if you:

  • Care about supporting people with disability and respecting their rights
  • Can communicate clearly, patiently and respectfully
  • Are confident making decisions within workplace rules
  • Can organise your work and manage responsibilities
  • Are comfortable guiding or supporting other workers
  • Can stay calm and professional in Challenging situations
     

You do not need to know everything before you start, this course will help you build confidence, leadership and advanced support skills.
